RUSTORATION 2D - Restored!
Hey everyone!
Evidently, I'm on a bit of a mission – going back through my old catalogue of Flash and Scratch projects and bringing them back to life with modern tools. It started with 52 WEEKS, then Pong Colours, and the generational run continues!
Next up is RUSTORATION 2D! This one originally began as a simple top-down shooter in Scratch, built for a coursework assignment back in the day. It was basic, kind of chaotic, and mostly involved throwing increasingly absurd numbers of enemies at the player.
While working on the larger UE5 sequel, RUSTORATION, I realized this old Scratch game could serve as a perfect prequel, showing the very beginning of the Zomborg outbreak. So, I decided to give it the full remaster treatment in Godot Engine!
This isn't just a straight port, though. I've rebuilt it from the ground up, aiming to make it a much more coherent and (hopefully!) enjoyable experience, while also tying it more closely into the established RUSTORATION lore. What's new compared to the old Scratch version?
- Complete visual overhaul (still pixel-y, but much improved!).
- Refined top-down shooter controls and physics for smoother gameplay.
- Structured wave system providing a more progressive challenge than the original endless chaos.
- Salvage collection from defeated Zomborgs, adding a resource gathering element.
- A tiered upgrade system: Use salvage to boost Health (Core), Speed (Servos), and Damage. Tiering up Health gives you a full repair!
- A dedicated Upgrade Screen between waves showing detailed stats: See your current Health (X/Y), Damage output (scaled to Newtons!), and Speed (in m/s) alongside your progress towards the next tier.
- The ability to scrap excess salvage for RustCoin currency (getting ready for a future weapon buying system!).
- A clean gameplay HUD displaying essential info like current health.
- A brief grace period after clearing a wave to quickly grab remaining salvage before the upgrade screen appears.
- A dynamic camera that follows the player smoothly.
- Proper sound design, including impact effects, UI sounds, and atmospheric background ambience tracks to set the mood.
It was a fun challenge translating the core idea into Godot and expanding on the mechanics significantly. Building the upgrade system and getting the ambience right adds so much compared to the original! I hope you enjoy this look back at the origins of the Zomborg apocalypse!
And don't worry, I won't stop here! More remakes are planned!
